This quiz has developed a personality of its own, and that personality is Mary Crawford. (And just like Mary Crawford, I am fonder of Fanny Price than I let on.)
Having said that, I wouldn’t advise this quiz if you’re averse to Fanny slander. I have one joke, and I keep making it. And if you’re after (slightly) more nuanced opinions about Austen and her heroines, I wrote about her six books and ranked her main couples here.
The results at the end are perhaps more about me than I initially intended to reveal, but there we have it. Let me know in the comments what you get and take it up with Jane if you’re offended by the result.

Mostly A: Lizzy Bennet
Well, well, well. Look at you. Lizzy Bennet. I bet you feel really good about yourself don’t you. And rightly so - Lizzy is arguably one of the best fictional characters ever created. My mum is the eldest of four sisters who often argue about which of them is most like Lizzy because they all know she’s great (I obviously back my mum). You are probably funny but sometimes take it a little bit too far and hurt someone’s feelings, but you’d go to bat hard for your inner circle.
Mostly B: Emma Woodhouse
I come out of this quiz as an Emma, but with Elinor not far behind. Those two are pretty different but probably do quite accurately sum up my different facets so I guess this quiz is science? Emma isn’t my favourite book, but I do really enjoy Emma as a character, and think she’s probably the one who would get on best in modern life. You are probably a delight, I guess, given this is what I got.
Mostly C: Fanny Price
While Fanny does have many admirable qualities, if you got to her via this quiz in particular then I’m a little concerned. You really shouldn’t have picked up any more than the stray C answer.
Mostly D: Marianne Dashwood
Ah Marianne, perennial little sister and hopeless romantic. Very ill-suited for modern life, I fear she would have a very bad time on the dating apps and have her heart broken a lot. You are probably very charming and likeable but I bet you send your friends really long WhatsApps about your feelings.
Mostly E: Anne Elliot
Anne is the Austen heroine I think I’d most like to be friends with and yet I only answered one E. Why am I so offended by the results of my own quiz? If you got Anne then let me know cause I think I’d like you, although lowkey she was one of the hardest one to write answers for. You are probably smart and calm and kind but potentially nursing some deep and private inner sadness which hardly anyone knows about.
Mostly F: Elinor Dashwood
If you don’t know me in real life, I am very obviously a big sister/eldest daughter (maybe this is obvious even if you don’t know me in real life) and I thought I would get Elinor over Emma (Seriously, I don’t know why I keep being so surprised by a quiz I wrote). You are probably caring and empathetic but worry too much about everyone being okay all the time.
Mostly G: Catherine Morland
Sweet Catherine, I love her so much (and I love Henry Tilney even more). Such a delight of a character, although I imagine a little infuriating to spend a great deal of time with. Another real little sister energy heroine. You are probably sweet and trusting and excitable but can get extremely carried away and end up in absurd situations.
I hope you were not offended by your results, let me know who you got, and if you would like further Austen content, because it’s my favourite thing to write. In my ongoing attempts to wrangle with Mansfield Park I might watch the 1999 and 2007 films next and write about them.
I got Emma with Catherine and Marianne rising and I have never been so annoyed by myself. HOW DID I ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. WHERE IS MY ELINOR, MY ANNE, MY LIZZY? I'm going to have to do some serious thinking about my life.
Also: Emma's favourite book being Emma is a work of genius, chef's kiss, no notes.
Well, I got mostly Anne (which bodes well for next week), but also some Lizzy, who are my two favourite characters anyway. Overall a most pleasing quiz!!
